In October 2010, The FDA issued a warning about atypical femur factures from  Fosamax and other bisphophonates used to treat osteoporosis.  These fractures were subtrochanteric and diaphyseal, which are very uncommon (they account for less than one percent of the femur and hip fractures that occur in the general population).  Additionally, the fractures seem to occur more frequently with women than men.  This led to new labeling requirements on the medications.
